Background
My name is Alessandra York and I am currently an Education Specialist at the Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning and Education (CIRCLE) at Washington University in St. Louis. I work as part of the HHMI Inclusive Excellence project at Washington University to promote success of all students by increasing the use of evidence-based pedagogies, other student-centered practices, and meaningful assessment in STEM courses. As an Education Specialist, I work with STEM faculty to design and implement classroom inclusiveness strategies and evaluate their effectiveness. I received my PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Genetics in 2018. My thesis focused on the genes responsible for the domestication of maize from its ancestor, teosinte. I specifically studied the traits of nonshattering and various traits related to ear size. I graduated from the University of Missouri in 2013 with a bachelors in Biological Sciences with University Honors. To learn more about my former research, feel free to visit the following:
As a graduate student, I used my passion for science and education to effectively mentor and prepare the next generation of scientists. I have mentored many students in the lab, explored teaching in a wide variety of settings, conducted educational research, participated in different outreach events and active in learning communities such as Delta, WISCIENCE and the NSF-funded Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL).
