Artifact #11: Teaching Evaluations and Reflection
When it came time to developing my teaching portfolio, I wanted to find a way to incorporate my teaching evaluations in a meaningful way. When applying to jobs, many employers are interested in seeing teaching evaluations as a measure of how strong you are as an instructor. However, much research has been done in the field that says student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are not accurate measures of teaching effectiveness (Hornstein 2017). Therefore, it was suggested to me to create a document that summarized the data found in my teaching evaluations and reflect on my teaching. I found this valuable because it nice to see growth from my first teaching experience to my most recent teaching experience and see how I've changed over time. It also is a good way to find areas of improvement for the future. Below are summaries of my teaching evaluations from Genetics 466 as a TA in Fall 2014 and as an instructor in Exploring Biology in Fall 2017.
